Aechmea fasciata
(urn plant, Silver vase)

This bromeliad, native to Brazil, is the best known bromeliad in cultivation. The variegated green leaves form an “urn” shaping its common name urn plant. This plant likes shade and ample water; the same requirements for mosquito habitat. This slow growing bromeliad can grow epiphytically, but might require some moss on its roots to prevent drying out. It blooms almost all year long in Hawaii. The flowers are sterile and don’t produce viable seed. Propagate via suckers from a friend’s plant or buy from your local Pono nursery.
