Family: Arecaceae

The Foxtail Palm is named for it’s attractive, feathery leaves. Its trunks are smooth and self-cleaning, displaying a silver/grey color. They are desired for their neat appearance, due to the short and manageable stature.
Native to Australia, its native stands are found in sandy and gravelly soil, thriving in full sun and heat. They are highly adaptable to different climates and will grow fast after established, reaching around 25 feet in height. They are popular ornamentals in LA, Capetown, Miami, Honolulu, and Dubai, and can reportedly survive from 20F to 100F temperatures. The Foxtail Palm can tolerate sea spray but eventually display brown tips, therefore doing much better inland. They do well from sea level to around 1000 feet in elevation.
This palm was only discovered in 1978, but after circulating the world, the demand has driven this species to endangered status in its native habitat.
