Brachiaria brizantha x Brachiaria ruziziensis, commonly known as cv. Mulato or Mulato grass, is a tropical forage hybrid developed by the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). It is a cross between two African grass species: Brachiaria brizantha and B. ruziziensis. This perennial grass has a semi-erect, spreading growth habit, with broad, hairy, dark green leaves. It was intentionally bred for use in pastures, valued for its high forage quality, good regrowth after grazing, tolerance to drought, and resistance to spittlebugs. It is widely promoted and planted in tropical livestock systems across Latin America, Africa, and Asia to improve milk and beef production.

Potential risks associated with Mulato grass stem from its reproductive traits and the invasive history of its parent species. It can spread locally through vigorous vegetative growth (stolons) and produces seed via apomixis, which allows it to persist and colonize disturbed areas. While current evidence does not classify it as a major weed, its congeneric relatives are known environmental weeds in tropical regions. Its climate adaptability and tolerance to grazing and fire could enable it to establish outside of managed pastures, particularly in open or degraded ecosystems. Caution is advised when planting in areas near sensitive natural habitats.
