Family: Fabaceae
Origin, Description & Uses
Diphysa americana, commonly known as guachipelín, is a flowering tree native to Mexico and Central America. This drought-tolerant species is well adapted to dry tropical climates and is valued for its resilience and beauty. It typically grows as a small to medium-sized deciduous tree with an open, spreading canopy and compound leaves. During the dry season, it produces striking clusters of bright yellow, pea-like flowers that attract pollinators and add vibrant seasonal color to landscapes. Guachipelín is often planted as an ornamental shade tree and is also used in agroforestry systems, living fences, and reforestation projects. Its dense, durable wood is highly valued for fence posts, tools, and construction because of its natural resistance to decay and insects.
Risks & Threats
Guachipelín is considered a low-risk species. While it produces seeds and can reproduce in suitable climates, it does not typically display aggressive spreading behavior or form dense stands that displace native vegetation. In tropical regions, it remains largely confined to cultivated areas and managed landscapes. As with any introduced plant, responsible planting and monitoring are recommended to ensure it does not spread beyond intended areas. When properly managed, Diphysa americana can be a beneficial addition to dryland landscapes without posing significant ecological concerns.
High Risk Traits:
- Seeds dispersed by wind.
- Tolerates lopping; used for living fences.
- Tolerates low-fertility soils.
- Pollinated by generalist insects (not pollinator limited)
- Produces viable seed.
- Native to tropical climates.
Low Risk Traits:
- No evidence of naturalization or weediness.
- Slow to mature (first flowering at 5-8 years).
- Low seed production (1-5 seeds per pod).
- Not shade tolerant.
- Single-trunked tree; does not climb or smother.
- Lacks spines, burrs, or toxicity.
- No evidence of allelopathy or parasitism.
- Unlikely to form dense thickets or increase fire risk.
- Provides forage for wildlife.
