Family: Myristicaceae
Origin, Description & Uses:
Myristica fragrans, commonly known as the nutmeg tree, is native to the Banda Islands in the Maluku region of Indonesia. It is an evergreen tropical tree that thrives in warm, wet climates and can grow into a medium-sized canopy tree. The plant is best known for producing two valuable spices: nutmeg, which comes from the seed, and mace, which is derived from the red, lacy covering of the seed. These spices have long been important in global cuisine for their warm, aromatic flavor and are also widely used in baking, cooking, and beverages. Beyond culinary uses, nutmeg has a history of traditional medicinal use and has also been used in small amounts for fragrances and cultural practices.
Risks & Threats:
This species is considered low risk and is not known to be invasive or problematic in most tropical island ecosystems, including Hawaiʻi. It generally requires specific warm, humid conditions and does not spread aggressively in natural habitats. While it does produce seeds that could potentially germinate under favorable conditions, it has not shown strong tendencies to escape cultivation or outcompete native vegetation. Overall, Myristica fragrans is regarded as a useful, well-behaved species, but as with any introduced plant, it is still important to monitor plantings to ensure it remains contained and does not negatively affect local ecosystems over time.
High Risk Traits:
- Shade tolerant
- Tolerates wide range of soils
- Produces viable seed
- Bird-dispersed (seeds survive gut passage)
- Intentionally spread by people
- Toxic to humans (large doses)
- Potential host for pests/pathogens
- Congeneric weed (related species weedy)
Low Risk Traits:
- Rarely naturalized; usually persists near cultivation
- No spines, thorns, or burrs
- Dioecious (requires male & female trees)
- No vegetative reproduction
- Long time to maturity (5–9+ years)
- No persistent seed bank (seeds short-lived)
- Not wind- or water-dispersed
- No dense thickets
- Not a fire hazard
- Not an agricultural/environmental weed (reported weed status unclear)
