Origin, Description & Uses
Tamarix parviflora, commonly known as smallflower tamarisk, is native to southeastern Europe, Türkiye, and Israel. It is a deciduous tree or large shrub that typically grows 15–30 feet tall, with slender arching branches, fine scale-like leaves, and masses of small pink flowers that bloom along the stems in spring. Its feathery appearance and tolerance of drought, heat, wind, saline soils, and poor growing conditions have made it a popular ornamental tree in arid and coastal landscapes. It has also been planted for erosion control, windbreaks, and land reclamation in dry regions.
Risks & Threats
Although Tamarix parviflora is not currently known to be naturalized in the Hawaiian Islands, it possesses several traits that are cause for concern. The species produces abundant seeds that are readily dispersed by wind and water, can establish along waterways and disturbed sites, and tolerates drought, flooding, and saline conditions. In other regions of the world, tamarisks have formed dense stands that displace native vegetation, alter soil chemistry through salt accumulation, change hydrology, and reduce habitat quality for native plants and wildlife. Because these characteristics could detrimentally impact tropical island ecosystems if the species were to escape cultivation, Plant Pono recommends choosing a low-risk or native alternative whenever suitable alternatives are available.

- Increases wildfire risk (flammable biomass)
Low Risk Traits:
- No spines, thorns, or burrs
- Not parasitic or toxic
- Not shade tolerant
- No persistent seed bank (seeds short-lived)
