Family: Arecaceae
Areca vestiaria (orange crownshaft palm, pinang merah) is a striking palm native to Indonesia that’s prized for its bright orange to red crownshaft and elegant appearance. It’s often planted as an ornamental for its vivid color and tidy form, making it a standout in tropical landscapes and gardens. The palm prefers humid, shaded conditions and grows best in well-drained soil.
In Hawaiʻi, Areca vestiaria is cultivated but not known to be naturalized. While it adds a splash of color to the landscape, it’s important to remember that some palms in the Areca genus can spread under favorable conditions. Gardeners should plant responsibly and avoid disposing of seeds or plant material in natural areas.
