Family: Primulaceae
Ardisia polysticta (niu zi guo) is a small evergreen shrub native to tropical Asia. It is grown as an ornamental plant for its glossy leaves, clusters of small pinkish flowers, and bright red berries that stand out against the dark foliage. The plant prefers shaded, moist environments and is often used in gardens or landscapes for its attractive, compact form.
Ardisia polysticta is potentially naturalizing on Oʻahu. It shares several traits with other Ardisia species that have become invasive elsewhere, including tolerance for shade, bird-dispersed fruit, and the ability to thrive in forest understories. Because of these characteristics, caution is advised when planting it near natural areas, and gardeners are encouraged to consider non-invasive alternatives.
High Risk Traits:
- Suited to tropical/subtropical climates
- Tolerates a wide range of soils
- Shade tolerant
- Naturalized outside its native range
- Bird-dispersed seeds
- Seeds survive gut passage
- Intentionally propagated by people
- Has weedy congeneric species (e.g., Ardisia crenata)
Low Risk Traits:
- No spines, thorns, or burrs
- Not toxic to humans
- No evidence of prolific seed production
- No evidence of a persistent seed bank
