Family: Primulaceae
Ardisia sieboldii (duo zhi zi jin niu) is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to East Asia. It has glossy dark green leaves and clusters of small, white to pinkish flowers that turn into bright red berries. Its colorful fruit and lush foliage make it a popular ornamental plant in gardens.
On Oʻahu, Ardisia sieboldii is potentially naturalizing, meaning it may start growing on its own outside of gardens. Because it is closely related to Ardisia elliptica, a species known to be invasive in Hawaii, caution is recommended when planting it. Monitoring is important to prevent it from spreading into natural areas.
High Risk Traits:
- Naturalized on Oahu
- Related Ardisia species are highly invasive
- Shade-tolerant
- Self-compatible
- Bird-dispersed
- High capacity for resprouting
Low Risk Traits:
- Palatable to deer and other browsing animals
- Non-toxic
- Landscaping and ornamental value
