Calliandra surinamensis, commonly known as pink powderpuff, is a tropical shrub or small tree native to northern South America, including Brazil, Colombia, Guyana, and Suriname. It is easily recognized by its distinctive and showy pink-and-white puffball flowers, which bloom in warm months and attract bees and other pollinators. This ornamental plant is widely cultivated in gardens and landscapes across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, often used as a decorative hedge, border plant, or even for bonsai. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates a wide range of soil types, making it a popular choice for low-maintenance landscaping.

While pink powderpuff is valued for its beauty, it does pose some ecological considerations in non-native environments. It is fast-growing, can resprout readily after damage, and forms a long-lived seed bank—traits that could support its spread if conditions are favorable. Although it is not currently known to be invasive or widely naturalized, its tolerance to diverse soils and climates means it has the potential to establish outside of cultivation. Care should be taken to prevent its escape into natural areas, particularly in sensitive island ecosystems where introduced plants can sometimes become problematic.
