Canna indica, commonly known as Indian shot, edible canna, or canna lily, is a striking tropical perennial native to Central and South America. It is easily recognized by its large, banana-like leaves and vibrant spikes of red, orange, yellow, or pink flowers. Historically cultivated as a food crop for its starchy, edible rhizomes and as an ornamental plant, it has been widely introduced around the world for its beauty and utility in gardens and landscapes.

While attractive, Canna indica poses a significant ecological threat in warm, moist climates. It spreads aggressively through tough underground rhizomes and long-lived seeds, forming dense, impenetrable stands that crowd out native plants, especially in wetlands, along streams, and in disturbed areas. Once established, it is very difficult to control and can disrupt natural ecosystems. Due to its high invasion risk, it is not recommended for planting in Hawaii and should not be disposed of in natural areas.
