Family: Clusiaceae
Clusia orthoneura (porcelain flower, pink clusea) is a broadleaf evergreen native to Colombia. It is a rare and unusual tropical plant for house plant collectors. There is no evidence of naturalizing outside of its native range and it is not documented to be naturalized on any Hawaiian Islands to date. It is toxic and skin irritant, thrives in tropical climates and is spread by seeds, all of which are invasive qualities, but due to limited information, risk prediction about this species may not be accurate.
High Risk Traits:
- Thrives in tropical climates
- Other Clusia species have become invasive
- Toxic and skin irritant
- Shade tolerant (could establish in intact forest)
- Reproduces by seeds
- Seeds dispersed by birds and intentionally by people
- Limited ecological information may reduce accuracy of risk prediction
Low Risk Traits:
- No reports of invasiveness or naturalization, but limited evidence of widespread introduction outside native range
- Unarmed (no spines, thorns, or burrs)
- Ornamental
- Dioecious
- Not reported to spread vegetatively
