This small to medium evergreen tree has smooth peeling bark and makes a striking ornamental addition to gardens, attracting birds and pollinators.
Risks & Threats:
This tree isn’t naturalized in Hawaii, but it grows quickly and produces lots of seeds, which could let it spread if planted near wild areas. It has traits that could impact native plants, so it should be monitored carefully and planted with caution.
High Risk Traits:
- Congeneric weeds exist
- Forms dense thickets
- Reproduces by viable seed
- Wind-dispersed seeds
- Widely cultivated intentionally
- Seed capsules used in floral arrangements (contaminant risk)
- Tolerates a wide range of soils
- Resprouts after fire
- History of repeated introductions
Low Risk Traits:
- No documented naturalization outside native range
- Not recorded as a weed
- No spines, thorns, or toxicity
- Not shade tolerant
- No vegetative reproduction
- Unreliable seed production in native habitat
