Origin, Description & Uses
Stenocarpus sinuatus (commonly known as the Queensland firewheel tree) is native to southeastern New Guinea and eastern Australia, where it grows in warm, humid rainforest environments. It is a striking evergreen tree best known for its spectacular, wheel-shaped clusters of bright red to orange tubular flowers that appear along the branches, giving the appearance of glowing “firewheels.” In cultivation, it is widely planted as an ornamental shade tree in tropical and subtropical landscapes, valued for its showy flowers, glossy foliage, and ability to attract birds and pollinators.
Risks & Threats
This species is potentially naturalized on Hawaiʻi Island, though it is currently considered low risk in the Hawaiian Islands due to its limited spread and generally non-aggressive behavior in managed landscapes. While it can produce seeds and establish in suitable conditions, it has not shown strong invasive tendencies in most Hawaiian environments to date. However, any naturalizing non-native species should be monitored over time, as changing conditions or ecological interactions could alter its behavior. Continued observation is recommended to ensure it does not expand beyond planted areas and begin to impact native plant communities.
