Origin, Description & Uses
Tabernaemontana elegans, commonly known as toad tree, is native to eastern and southern Africa, ranging from southern Somalia to South Africa. It is an evergreen shrub or small tree valued for its glossy dark green leaves, fragrant white pinwheel-shaped flowers, and distinctive paired seed pods containing bright orange seeds. Because of its attractive appearance and extended flowering season, it is widely grown as an ornamental in tropical and subtropical landscapes. It is also used as a screening plant or small specimen tree, and in its native range, various parts of the plant have a long history of traditional medicinal use.

Risks & Threats
Tabernaemontana elegans is considered a low-risk species for Hawaiʻi. It has not demonstrated invasive behavior in the Hawaiian Islands or other tropical regions where it is cultivated. While its fruits are consumed by birds and other wildlife within its native range, there is little evidence that it spreads aggressively or forms dense, self-sustaining populations outside cultivation. As with any introduced plant, it should be monitored for unexpected spread, but current evidence indicates that it poses little risk to Hawaiʻi’s native ecosystems and is an appropriate choice where a non-invasive ornamental tree or shrub is desired.
