Origin, Description & Uses
Tapeinochilos ananassae, commonly known as Indonesian wax ginger or wax ginger, is a tropical ornamental plant native to the Maluku Islands of Indonesia, New Guinea, and northern Queensland, Australia. It is an evergreen, clump-forming species with upright leafy stems that resemble ginger and produces striking, bright red, waxy cone-like flower heads at the base of the plant. The long-lasting, colorful blooms make it a popular choice for tropical gardens, landscaping, and cut flower arrangements. It thrives in warm, humid climates with rich, moist soils and partial shade, where it adds bold texture and vibrant color to the landscape.

Risks & Threats
Tapeinochilos ananassae is considered a low-risk species for Hawaiʻi. It has not been reported as invasive and shows little evidence of spreading aggressively beyond cultivation. The plant reproduces primarily by division of its underground rhizomes and is typically propagated intentionally rather than dispersing widely on its own. While gardeners should always monitor ornamental plants for unexpected spread, this species poses little known threat to native ecosystems or agricultural areas. With responsible cultivation and proper garden maintenance, Indonesian wax ginger can be enjoyed as an attractive ornamental with minimal environmental risk.
