Family: Scrophulariaceae
ʻAeʻae is a creeping herb that forms an excellent groundcover. This indigenous plant has an extensive native range, including Africa, Oceania, South America, North America, and Hawaiʻi. Blooms continuously throughout the year producing 100s of light blue/white flowers, which bees often visit. Grown in full sun, the light green leaves are more robust. Grown in part sun, the leaves are a bit looser.
The natural habitat in Hawaiʻi is on seeping coastal cliffs. ʻAeʻae thrives with salt spray and waterlogged conditions. It is the perfect plant for hanging baskets or spilling out of a pot combined with taller plants. It tolerates light traffic and works well between pavers. Also, used as an aquarium plant or lining a pond edge. ʻAeʻae is used extensively medicinally around the world.
