Family: Rhabdodendraceae
‘Ānapanapa is an endemic plant that is naturally found on the islands of Oʻahu, Lana’i, and Hawaiʻi Island. It grows well in dry coastal areas but will also tolerate densely moist sites. However, this coastal kauila can sprawl and overwhelm nearby plants, so it may need to be pruned regularly in a landscape. It grows up to 20′ tall and can have an 8′ in spread. Used as an accent plant, as a hedge, or if planted on a steep area and left unpruned, it can help with erosion control. ‘Ānapanapa means glistening and refers to the gleaming leaves.
