Family: Cyperaceae
Ahuawa is flood-tolerant and can be used along water banks to control erosion, yet it flourishes in dry conditions. It is often used as food, nesting material, and shelter by native waterfowl. This sedge tolerates salty water and soils. As one of the few native plants cultivated by early Hawaiians, it was prized for its use in medicines, cordage, lei, strainers, and as brushes to paint color onto tapa (kapa).
