Family: Asparagaceae
Dracaena fragrans is a shrub native to tropical Africa. Rosettes of green sword-shaped leaves are spread along the stem canes. Each ribbon-like leaf is parallel-veined and wide. Indoors, corn plant grows from 3 to 10 feet tall. To achieve a robust full look, three canes of differing sizes are grown in individual pots. It does not branch like Dracaena reflexa.
Corn plant is the common name due to its similarity in appearance – upright growth and gracefully arching leaves. While the solid green corn plant is handsome in its own right, new cultivars provide an exciting array of colors and leaf patterns. ‘Massangeana’ green leaves with a central yellow stripe is popular. Some cultivars are compact and dense, others are tall with the leaf rosettes more spread out.
Corn plant and all the cultivars are tried and true indoor plants. As far back as 1850, it was considered an indoor plant. They are easy to grow, thrive in low light conditions, and have few pests. Good drainage is essential.
