Family: Acanthaceae
Shrimp plant is a flowering, herbaceous shrub with a dense, upright habit. Oval-shaped green leaves tend to grow in clusters. Insignificant white flowers grow from in between showy bracts. From the stem ends, grows a chain of overlapping, red to pink bracts resembling a cooked shrimp, hence the common name. Flowering occurs year-round.
Native to Mexico, the shrimp plant has been in the horticulture trade since 1936. It grows best with part shade, too much sun will yellow the leaves. They need protection from the wind. Pinch the tops and prune a few times to promote robust growth. Viable seeds are not made in Hawaii. Propagation is by cuttings and suckers.
