There are several species and varieties of Mussaenda that are valued for their striking, colorful bracts. The colors range from peach, red, white, pink, to a combination, and in Hawaiʻi, it blooms throughout the year. The star-shaped flowers are small, yellow, and found in the center of the bracts. Mussaenda is not drought tolerant and will need supplemental water during dry periods. One of the most striking characteristics is that the plant stays relatively small – up to 20 feet – and is very easy to establish. The varied colored petals make it exciting and unique; mussaenda is appreciated because it is low maintenance, variety of colors and girth, and ease of maintaining.
