Family: Oleaceae
Olopua is a small tree endemic to Hawaiʻi. The crown is densely packed with shiny green leaves. It is a slow-growing, low-maintenance tree that grows up to 15 feet. It does best in full sun. The wood is extremely strong. In the past, olopua was used to make adze handles, ʻoʻo bars, spears, and fishing hooks. Germination by seed is slow, 3 to 5 months. Softwood cuttings require regular misting for rooting to take place.
