Family: Portulacaceae
‘Ihi is a succulent native plant. It looks somewhat similar to jade, except the leaves grow in 4’s along the stem and are more tightly clustered. Bright yellow flowers grow from stems arising out of the center rosette. It works well as a groundcover; however, ensure it has excellent drainage. ‘Ihi thrives in containers on a lanai with direct sun. It’s best to use unglazed terracotta pots. This kind of container doesnt hold in moisture, which is essential for xeriscape plants. ‘Ihi grows naturally in harsh conditions in lower elevations. Too much water will attract pests (fungal rot, slugs, snails), and plants will become leggy. Therefore, it is crucial to let it dry out between watering!
While it is listed as federally endangered, ‘ihi is available to purchase with a red tag.
