Family: Arecaceae
Loulu is a fan palm endemic to Maui. Short in stature, this palm is an excellent choice for small spaces and urban places. Foliar spray with fish emulsion once a month, especially if it is container-grown. It is slow-growing, drops little to no rubbish, and is low maintenance once established.
Loulu palms used to be a common sight in Hawaii, especially in lowland valleys. However, development and the introduction of seed-eating rats have greatly diminished this once abundant tree. The Hawaiian name loulu, translates to umbrella. In the old days, fronds were used as protection from the sun and rain.
