Family: Araceae
Pritchardia martii is a stately fan palm. The fronds are deep olive to nearly bluish-green on top, but silvery bronze beneath.
The landscape industry, in partnership with Department of Transportation, plans to provide seeds for large-scale groves and landscape installations. This would ease pressure on wild populations and encouraging people to start growing this lovely palm.
There are several species of native Pritchardia, many confined to a single valley or island within the state. The loulu hiwa is endemic to Oahu; it is best to grow the species of loulu that is endemic to your area or island. Rats, pigs, and over-collection threaten loulu in the wild. This species is easy to grow, has minimal pest problems, and although slow growing, it does very well in the landscape.
