A shrub that has a dense, upright habit. Endemic to Hawaiʻi, naupaka kuahiwi grows best at middle elevations. Protect from the wind, fertilize lightly yet often for optimal growth. It blooms sporadically throughout the year. The white half flowers are slightly fragrant. Following flowering are plump purple drupes, excellent fodder for native birds.
This species is faster growing than many other native plants and will grow to 15 feet if left unpruned. Naupaka kuahiwi is adapted for the kuahiwi or mountains, which means cooler and wetter temperatures with well drained loamy soil is best.
