Family: Araceae
An herbaceous plant that is popular in interior landscaping. Glossy green, lance-shaped leaves arise out of the soil without stems. The flower, similar to a white sail or white tulip anthurium, grows above the magnificent foliage. Blooming in the Spring and Summer, the creamy-white spathe has a slight scent.
Native to the understory of tropical forests in Central America, the peace lily thrives in low light conditions. It is easy to care for and maintain in the indoor environment. Wipe the leaves of dust periodically and let the soil dry out between waterings. Besides the aesthetics and extra oxygen from growing living plants inside, they also filter the air from harmful chemicals. The peace lily was one of the plants NASA studied to naturally clean the air in the space station.
The genus name Spathiphyllum translates to spathe leaf, referring to the flower. Reproduction is from separating clumps into singular plants.
