Family: Poaceae
ʻAkiʻaki is a small, creeping grass that is native to Hawaiʻi. Its natural habitat is in sandy, coastal areas. While it does flower and create seeds, they are largely sterile. Propagation is typically from rhizomatous slips. The grass reaches 8 inches when in flower. The roots grow down to 18 inches, making it a perfect grass for erosion control. ʻAkiʻaki is adapted to drought conditions and ocean spray.
