Family: Poaceae
‘Aki’aki is a small, creeping grass that is native to Hawaii. Its natural habitat is in sandy, coastal areas. While it does flower and create seeds, they are largely sterile. Propagation is from rhizomatous slips. The grass reaches 8 inches when in flower. The roots grow down to 18 inches, a perfect grass for erosion control. ‘Aki’aki is adapted to drought conditions and ocean spray.
